Medication Shortage Updates:

Many clients have experienced the frustration of not being able to fill prescribed medications, especially the medications used to treat attention deficit disorder (ADHD). The current shortage has clinicians and clients tearing our hair out trying to secure medications that are needed for individuals diagnosed with ADHD. It is unclear when the shortages will end. Until then here are some suggestions that have been helpful when refilling ADHD medications:

1. Check with the pharmacy to ensure medication is in stock: Call the pharmacy to ask if they have the requested medication before asking me to send it along. This saves us both time and effort. Ideally, call ahead a few days before the medication runs out, allowing us time to troubleshoot if the medication is out of stock.

2. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL MEDS RUN OUT (Please): With shortages, there is no guarantee of "same day refill." Even if I can send it to the pharmacy, they may not have it. My office policy is 1-3 business days for all refills, especially stimulant medications. I try to send refills once clients have verified the medication is in stock. Exceptions to this are weekends/after office hours.

3. Ask for Brand Name Only: I have met with the manufacturers of Vyvanse who report Vyvanse, brand name only, remains an option. Most pharmacies report "not having any Vyvanse," in reference to the generic. If insurance will pay for brand name, it can usually be filled.

4. Prior Authorization: If the medication is costly, ask the pharmacy if a "prior authorization" would lower the cost. Insurance prefers to pay for cheaper/generic alternatives, however, in the absence of generic medication, most insurances will approve the brand name only. If I am aware a prior authorization is needed, I can complete it.

More updates as this situation unfolds.

Telehealth has become an essential part of healthcare, and it's here to stay. the convenience and accessibility it provides, patients can receive medical care from the comfort of their own homes. As technology continues to advance, telehealth will only become more prevalent in the healthcare industry.

The Covid telehealth exceptions for controlled substance prescriptions remain in effect through December, 2024, making care more easily accessible and convenient.
